The Beaufort County Planning and Zoning Department is seeking a Deputy Director to help guide the future of one of the fastest growing and most distinctive areas in the Southeast. This is a unique leadership role for someone who wants to make a lasting impact while living in a truly special place. Home to the historic City of Beaufort and the resort community of Hilton Head Island, Beaufort County blends vibrant small towns, a unique natural and cultural landscape, coastal charm, and unmatched outdoor recreation.

Why this role matters:

As Deputy Director, you will be at the forefront of shaping Beaufort County's growth. You'll oversee the Community Development Code, ensuring it reflects best practices while protecting the County's unique natural, cultural and historic character. You'll also lead the development review process, helping to balance community needs with responsible growth and innovation.

What you'll do:

  • Lead the oversight and maintenance of the Community Development Code to keep it relevant, effective, and responsive to community needs.
  • Guide and improve the development review process, ensuring efficiency, consistency, and fairness.
  • Partner with the Planning and Zoning Director to set and achieve departmental goals and priorities.
  • Supervise and mentor staff, building a strong team to support Beaufort County's planning vision.
  • Manage long-range planning projects, special initiatives, and research efforts.
  • Serve as a key resource for the public, providing guidance on planning, development, and environmental policies.

What we're looking for:

  • Master's degree in planning, geography, landscape architecture, architecture, environmental studies, or a related field.
  • 8–10 years of professional planning or related experience (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
  • AICP certification.
  • Valid state driver's license with an acceptable driving history.
