JOB DESCRIPTION

Due to an upcoming retirement, the Village of Hinsdale, Illinois, is seeking an experienced and collaborative professional to serve as its next Community Development Director. Hinsdale, a historic community located just 20 miles west of Chicago, is known for its architecturally distinctive homes, vibrant downtown, nationally ranked schools, and strong sense of community. The Community Development Department oversees permitting, inspections, zoning, planning, land use, and historic preservation, issuing over 1,200 permits and conducting more than 4,000 inspections in 2024. The Director will lead a skilled team, provide strategic guidance on redevelopment and preservation issues, and serve as a key liaison to the Village Board and commissions.

The position offers opportunities to guide zoning modernization, manage historic preservation efforts, improve permitting processes, and review complex redevelopment proposals. The ideal candidate will bring strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills, with a foundation in land use planning, zoning law, and historic preservation.

A bachelor's degree in urban planning, public administration, or a related field is required; a master's degree and AICP certification are preferred.

The salary range is $130,375–$188,741, with an expected starting salary of $150,000+/- DOQ, plus an excellent benefits package.
