JOB DESCRIPTION

The Montgomery County Planning Department is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Transportation Planner II to support complex transportation planning analyses and contribute to multimodal planning initiatives for the Transportation Planning Division. To succeed in this position, the selected candidate must possess strong analytical and problem-solving skills; the ability to interpret and apply transportation data and policies; experience with GIS, data visualization, a working knowledge of data management tools or scripting; and the ability to communicate complex technical information clearly through written reports and presentations.

 

Examples of Important Duties

 

  • Helping to maintain and enhance the department’s Multimodal Hybrid database, including data entry and QA/QC, development and maintenance of database efficiencies, including Python scripts.
  • Leading technical evaluation of transportation capital improvement projects and private development projects for conformance to county code, guidelines and master plans, as well as national standards and best practices.
  • Preparing technical reports and presenting transportation-related issues to the Planning Board. The focus of these efforts will likely be part of the agency’s Mandatory Referral process involving review of transportation capital improvement projects planned within Montgomery County.
  • Obtaining and analyzing data from a range of sources (e.g., US Census, USDOT Bureau of Transportation Statistics, MWCOG’s Regional Travel Survey, National Household Travel Survey, etc.) to prepare analyses of transportation conditions, countywide and in sub-areas. These analyses require strong attention to detail and an ability to analyze and distill complex technical information using GIS.  
  • As requested, completing discrete research assignments for transportation efforts, such as complete streets, walkability, access to transit, access management, and road safety/Vision Zero.
  • Completing technical transportation analyses in support of countywide and area master plan development. 
  • Creating accurate, easily comprehensible, thoroughly documented charts, maps, graphics, and interactive map applications to enhance written products and presentations as appropriate.

 

Minimum Qualifications

 

  1. Bachelor’s Degree in Planning, Geography, Architecture, Parks and Recreation, Transportation, Urban Design, Engineering, Environmental Science, Public Policy, Economics or any related field.
  2. Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional level planning experience or specific area of assignment such as transportation planning, environmental planning or urban planning.
  3. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be substituted, which together total six (6) years.
  4. Valid driver's license (depending on area of assignment) in accordance with both State and Commission rules and regulations.  Driver’s license must be unencumbered by restrictions, revocations, suspensions, or points that could limit the employee’s ability to drive Commission vehicles or perform driving duties required by the position of assignment.

The salary range listed above represents the earning potential for this position. Salary is commensurate with experience. This position is eligible for a sign-on bonus (external candidates only).
