The county's code permits private-use solar energy systems by right in all districts and allows commercial renewable energy facilities as special uses in certain districts. It allows private use solar energy systems of rooftop panels or detached panels less than 40 feet in height as a permitted use in all districts; systems higher than 40 feet require a special use permit (§16.08.250).

The county code also includes a section on commercial "renewable energy facilities," including definitions and standards. Commercial REFs are special uses in industrial, rural resource, or agricultural districts; the regulation includes a list of required application documentation (§16.16.030).
