solar energy

The village's zoning ordinance includes regulations for solar energy collection panels and solar water heating systems (Sec. 17.12.3.I). Solar panels are permitted on any roof in any zoning district as permitted accessory uses. No freestanding panels are allowed in residential zoning districts. Solar panels must be flush with the roof line when possible, not extend beyond the roof line, and not be located closer than 10 feet from an adjacent property line. Solar panels shall not cover more than 25% of the total roof surface and shall not be located on a roof face that faces the front yard, though solar shingles may cover the entire roof if they are made to appear as part of the roof and do not cause glare. The solar panel must match the roof color and cannot be artificially lighted. A building permit is required. Solar panels not in service for 180 days must be removed and the property restored to its original condition in 30 days. Their primary use should be to generate energy for the property where it is located. The ordinance defines a solar panel (Sec. 17.16.3).
