The city's zoning code permits solar panels attached to permitted principal or accessory buildings or as accessory structures in all zoning districts subject to standards (Sec. 1250.16). Systems attached to buildings are subject to building height and setback requirements. Roof-mounted panels must be integrated into the roof's surface or installed flush to roof; flush-mounted panels are restricted to side- or rear-facing roofs. Panels mounted on building walls are limited to one side or rear wall and may not face the street. Free-standing systems are limited to rear yard locations, 4 feet in height, and the lesser of 180 square feet or 1 percent of lot area coverage. Glare is prohibited and a building permit is required.
