The city's zoning regulations define six solar-related terms encompassing solar access, solar easements, and solar energy systems (Sec. 11.02).

The code's section on Alternative Energy Systems covers solar energy systems, establishing them as an accessory use in all districts and allowing them to be exempted from setback, height, and lot coverage restrictions by variance (Sec. 11.73.3.A,B). It provides for solar access protection in residential districts, prohibiting vegetation and structures that cast more shadow than a hypothetical 10-foot wall on the property line between 9:30am and 2:30pm, though pre-existing vegetation and structures are exempt; violations are considered public nuisances (Sec. 11.73.3.C).
