Solar Energy

In the city's Land Development Code, the development standards allow for encroachments into yards if needed for solar or alternative energy purposes in both residential and commercial districts (§901.03.A & D). Active or passive solar energy equipment is exempted from screening requirements if they would interfere with its operation (Sec. 907.01.A). Apparatus needed for the operation of active or passive solar energy systems may be permitted by the Director for any use subject to any specifications set by the Director (§908.D).

For planned residential development districts, resort commercial districts, planned development districts, and special use districts, recommendations for project approvals must show that the development will promote environmental quality and energy conservation, including through the protection of sunlight for solar energy system use (§617.06.A.1.c & B.3; §623.06.A.1.c & B.3; §624.07.A.1.c & B.3; §632.06.A.1.c & B.1.c).
