Built Environment and Health

The city’s comprehensive plan addresses health-related issues in several of the elements. The Land Use and Community Planning element discusses the health impacts of Airport Land Use and stresses the importance of Environmental Justice. The Mobility element seeks to promote transportation modes, like bicycling, that promote physical activity. The Public Facilities, Services, and Safety element talks about the health impacts of Waste Management and how to improve Healthcare Services and Facilities.

Historic Preservation

The city’s comprehensive plan contains a historic preservation element. It outlines the federal, state, and local legal framework, details the responsibilities associated with being a Certified Local Government (CLG), and discusses the history of the built environment of the city, summarized in Table HP-1. Goals and policies related to identification and preservation of historic resources and to education, benefits, and incentives are listed.

In the city's General Plan, the Conservation Element includes a section on Sustainable Energy, which sets a goal of increased local energy independence and includes supporting policies of maximizing clean renewable resource use in city energy planning programs (CE-I.2), pursuing state and federal funding for renewable energy research and development (CE-I.3), supporting and promoting the installation of PV panels and other forms of renewable energy production in both public and private development (CE-I.5), using renewable energy sources to the extent feasible (CE-I.10), and collaborating to develop incentives for renewable energy use (CE-I.11). A section on Climate Change and Sustainable Development includes a policy of employing green building techniques, including site design and orientation that addresses sun-shade patterns and using on-site renewable energy generation (CE-A.5).
