Accessory Dwelling Units

The county’s unified development code permits attached accessory apartments by right in most residential districts and detached accessory apartments by discretionary approval in most residential districts, subject to use-specific standards (Appendix A, Table 11.1(a)). The standards for attached accessory apartments address permissible uses on the same lot, parking, unit size, entrances, appearance, utilities, and exemption from density calculations (§16-4.2). The standards for detached accessory apartments address permissible uses on the same lot, parking, unit size, entrances, appearance, utilities, manufactured housing standards, placement, and exemption from density calculations (§16-4.3).

Housing Supply Planning

The county's unified development code encourages increasing housing options for all by permitting attached accessory apartments by right in most residential districts, and detached accessory apartments by discretionary approval in most residential districts.

The county’s tree protection and replacement code establishes tree preservation, planting, and maintenance requirements for public and private property (§86-31 et seq.). It addresses definitions, exemptions, zoning applications, permit procedures, tree protection standards, tree replacement standards, special requirements, location of trees within a development, tree protection/replacement plan requirements and elements, plan review procedures, density requirements, significant trees, alternative compliance, maintenance periods, enforcement procedures, and roles and responsibilities of the tree protection commission.
