Ordinance No. 5434 places restrictions on outdoor lighting to protect wildlife and preserve dark skies in Maui County, Hawaii. Outdoor lighting must be shielded and directed downwards so it does not disturb wildlife and shine on the ocean. Dark night skies have cultural, astronomical, biodiversity, and tourism value. Restricting light pollution will conserve energy and protect native Hawaiian wildlife.
