The Safe System Approach is an internationally developed and accepted framework for reducing road fatalities. While transportation agencies in the United States have committed to achieving zero traffic deaths, many continue to see increases instead.
Take a step toward making Vision Zero plans a reality by examining how the Safe System Approach can be applied in the U.S. to reduce and eventually eliminate traffic deaths nationwide.
The Safe System Approach is based on understanding crash causation and uses proactive techniques to separate users in space and time and reduce kinetic energy forces for the safety of all road users.
The approach uses modal hierarchy to reduce kinetic energy forces and protect the most vulnerable road users, such as pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorcyclists. Streets designed for all road users lead to safer and more equitable communities and reduce transportation-related carbon emissions.
