Last year marked 20 years of mitigation since the Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000. In those two decades, tens of thousands of communities have used mitigation planning to understand and reduce their risks. Mitigation plans are a prerequisite for certain kinds of non-emergency disaster assistance. Mitigation planning is evolving.
In 2022, FEMA's National Mitigation Planning Program is releasing the next generation of state and local mitigation planning policies and resources. The updated policies reinforce resilience as a whole-community effort that builds state and local capabilities to plan for long-term risk reduction, climate change, and equitable outcomes.
