FAICP Statement

George Homewood is the unabashed defender of good planning. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the planning profession and local government as an advocate for sound planning legislation, leading APA Virginia to become one of the most effective chapters in legislative affairs and advocacy. George has served APA and APA Virginia in both leadership and advocacy roles. Professionally, George has successfully brought together rural and growth interests in York and New Kent counties and he has set Norfolk on a course to embrace resiliency planning in light of increasing threats from sea-level rise.

Professional Biography

George M Homewood, FAICP, CFM, currently serves as Director of City Planning for the City of Norfolk in southeastern Virginia. He has been a national leader in promoting a long-term vision of resilience to strengthen physical, economic, and social resilience in a rising water environment. During his tenure in Norfolk, the city has updated their plan to establish resiliency goals, and adopted a new zoning ordinance that is the most resilience-focused zoning approach in the nation. He has served as President of the APA Virginia Chapter 2012-2017 and currently chairs APA's Legislative and Policy Committee.
