FAICP Statement

George Homewood is the unabashed defender of good planning. He has worked tirelessly on behalf of the planning profession and local government as an advocate for sound planning legislation, leading APA Virginia to become one of the most effective chapters in legislative affairs and advocacy. George has served APA and APA Virginia in both leadership and advocacy roles. Professionally, George has successfully brought together rural and growth interests in York and New Kent counties and he has set Norfolk on a course to embrace resiliency planning in light of increasing threats from sea-level rise.

Professional Biography

George M Homewood FAICP CFM As Planning Director of Norfolk, VA which hosts the world's largest naval base and is the east coast's most at-risk city for sea level rise, Mr. Homewood has been a national leader in promoting a long-term vision of resilience to strengthen physical, economic and social resilience in a rising water environment together with expanding the planner’s toolbox to implement resilient strategies. Collaboration and asset mapping are the keys to this approach to resilience. During the COVID pandemic, the resilience construct was expanded to include support for entrepreneurialism and neighborhood cohesion. Within the American Planning Association where he chaired the Legislation and Policy Committee and the PlanningHome initiative from 2018-2021, Mr. Homewood has been a thought leader around the ethical obligation of planners to support and incorporate diversity, equity and inclusion into plans and planning processes. Mr. Homewood attended the College of William & Mary, Christopher Newport College and The George Washington University and was inducted into the College of Fellows of the American Institute of Certified Planners in 2016.
