Navigating uncharted waters

Rick Tollakson saw the potential for a 150-mile network of waterways and the surrounding areas as a driver of economic growth in the Greater Des Moines region. The 2018 National Planning Advocate award recipient worked hard to engage the community in planning for the waterways, and thus the future of Des Moines.

Learn how San Diego streamlined permitting and licensing

The City of San Diego launched a new online portal that calculates where a project is allowed, which permits will be required, and how much the permits will cost. This cuts down on trips to City Hall and has saved over 3,000 hours of staff time in 2018. Learn more at www.opencounter.com/case_study.

From the Blog

The House Appropriations Committee recently approved its FY19 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development (THUD) spending bill. The bill maintains some of the dramatic program funding increases made in the FY18 omnibus bill, proposes cuts to the HOME program and BUILD (formally known as TIGER), and limits the federal match for New Starts projects to 50 percent. And hear from Gabriela Juarez, AICP, chair of APA's Transportation Division, on how receiving the APA Foundation's Judith McManus Price scholarship in 2004 helped launch her work as an APA leader at the state and national levels. Reminder: scholarship applications for the Foundation's Price and Charles Abrams scholarships are due on June 1!
