Equity is a necessary guiding principle for planners and all who participate in the process of planning as advisors, advocates, and decision makers. The first video in APA's new multi-part series, Voices of Equity in Planning, includes interviews with public- and private-sector planners across the country, whose work has centered on equity for years.

Additional videos exploring the crossroads of equity with policy and planning practice will be released in the coming weeks. This project was made possible thanks to the generous gift of time by members of our Social Equity Task Force last year, chaired by Carlton Eley. The work of the Task Force was recently integrated into APA's Equity, Diversity and Inclusion strategy.

Social space, physical distance

The COVID-19 pandemic is redefining our public spaces. In July's issue of Planning magazine, discover how we can make them more resilient and accessible to all. As the U.S. sets new case records, Planning draws empirical evidence from the policies that helped states bend the curve last spring. Then, dive into how 5G offers a full spectrum of opportunities — but with just as many challenges.

Bob Tuttle, director of the New York City Department of City Planning's Capital Planning Division, describes how in the early days of the response, the division was asked to use its robust datasets and knowledge of city facilities to identify possible locations for surge hospitals.

Racial equity in planning organizations

To create equitable communities, planners must also create equitable planning departments. In the latest issue of the Journal of the American Planning Association, this viewpoint explores the history and present of racial inequality in planning and offers a framework for guiding racial equity goals.
