Demand a fair and accurate census

The U.S. Department of Commerce recently decided to include a new and untested citizenship question in the 2020 Census. Experts on both sides of the aisle have opposed the decision, as have APA and other organizations.

APA President Cynthia Bowen, AICP, recently wrote to Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross and expressed our belief that adding the citizenship question threatens planners' ability to help citizens and policy makers in marginalized communities make choices necessary to address their biggest challenges: jobs, education, economic development, affordable housing, and poverty. Her letter urged him to reverse a decision that potentially undermines a full, fair, and comprehensive count.

Please join APA and the Planners' Advocacy Network in advocating for access to high-quality data. Urge your representatives to safeguard the 2020 Census so planners and policy makers have the data they need to make well-informed local decisions.
Acting toward diversity

Members of the Diversity Committee of the APA New York Metro Chapter have been working proactively on recruiting, diversifying our profession, and promoting equitable planning practice. Only a few APA chapters have diversity committees, and we invite chapters who do not yet have one to consider creating one to help advance planning equity goals at the state and regional levels.

As a first step, we developed a Q&A with DivComm leaders to share insights on how the Committee started, what we do, and what lessons we have learned, in hopes of inspiring and supporting other chapters to take action for a more diverse and equitable profession. Please read our story and join us in the movement!

POLICY AND ADVOCACY
Great Places connect planners and legislators

Planners in communities as disparate as Tucson, Arizona, and Pitt County, North Carolina, have found that an APA-designated Great Place in America opens myriad opportunities for promotion, publicity, and increasingly, advocacy. In fact, many planners and legislators have discovered firsthand how mutual pride in a local Great Place leads to enhanced understanding and stronger relationships. Learn how planners use Great Places as a tool to communicate the value of planning.

New TDR resource collection

Transfer of Development Rights — allowing property owners to buy unused development rights from designated "sending" areas and use them in designated "receiving" areas — can be a powerful market-driven growth management strategy. The latest addition to APA's Research KnowledgeBase highlights how communities use TDR programs to support land or resource preservation goals. Explore the new TDR collection to discover background info, policy guidance, and examples of plans and regulations for TDR from across the country.
