National awards honor planning excellence and achievement
APA congratulates this year's National Planning Award recipients, whose achievements exemplify planners' best efforts to create stronger, healthier, and more just communities. Their work — ranging from engaging communities to expanding mobility — inspires us all. A distinguished jury selected five Excellence and 16 Achievement awards recipients to be honored at the National Planning Awards Luncheon on Monday, April 23, at NPC18 in New Orleans.

DC awards honor outstanding divisions and members
Six APA divisions and two individual members will receive Divisions Council awards at the APA/AICP Annual Meeting and Leadership Honors on Tuesday, April 24, at NPC18.The honored divisions are: International, LGBTQ and Planning, Planning and the Black Community, Sustainable Communities, Transportation Planning, and Women and Planning. Deborah Myerson, AICP, and David Gattis, FAICP, will receive the Division Chair's Award and the Terry F. Holzheimer, FAICP, Leadership Award, respectively.

Part of the Plan4Health legacy: a Texas toolkit...
A series of tornados that ripped through the state prompted the APA Texas Chapter and the University of North Texas School of Public Health to form a Texas Planners4Health team. The team developed a disaster planning and recovery toolkit for small communities and is raising donations for residents in tornado-riven Van Zandt County.

Practicing flood mitigation
Integrating flood mitigation into planning practice is a hot topic among planners today. As part of a FEMA-funded project, APA's Hazards Planning Center and partners are working with Downers Grove, Illinois, to pilot an innovative flow path model and community engagement tool. The goals? Educate the public and help practitioners effectively plan for flooding in their communities. APA researcher Joe DeAngelis describes the first successful pilot and discusses its utility for planners nationwide.
